Your chats stay on your machine.
This policy covers the Threadmark browser extension and this website. It is deliberately short because the extension does very little with your data: it reads a page and writes a file.
Effective 23 October 2026 · version 1.0
1. What this policy covers
Threadmark is a browser extension for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, plus this static website. The extension is distributed as an unpacked beta build. The website provides documentation, a download and a demo; it is not connected to the extension at runtime.
2. What the extension handles
- Page content. When you ask for an export, the extension reads the conversation visible on the current page (or, for batch export, on the conversations you selected). It extracts text, code, tables, math, images and links from that page.
- Settings. Your format, filename template, folder, theme and language preferences are stored in
chrome.storage.local. - Library. If “Save every export to the library” is on, the exported conversation is stored in IndexedDB in your browser profile so it can be searched and re-exported.
- Exported files. Files you export are written to your Downloads folder (or a subfolder you choose) using the browser’s downloads API.
- Recorder files. If you choose a file for append or insert, the browser grants the extension write access to that one file. The file handle is stored in IndexedDB; the extension never scans or lists other files.
- Local site. The local archive site is generated from your library inside the extension and downloaded as a ZIP. Opening its pages does not contact Threadmark; linked images may still load from their original hosts.
None of this is transmitted to us or to any third party. There is no server-side component to receive it.
3. Network activity
The extension makes no API calls, loads no remote code, pings no analytics and checks for no updates. Rendering an image in a preview may request that image from its original host, exactly as the source page would. The pages you visit (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.) continue to communicate with their own providers under their own policies; Threadmark only reads the rendered page.
This website is served by Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes standard request data (IP address, user agent, requested URL, timestamp) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. We do not add analytics scripts, advertising pixels or tracking cookies.
4. Permissions, one by one
| Permission | When it is used | Optional? |
|---|---|---|
storage | Saving settings and the local library. | Required |
downloads | Writing an export you requested. | Required |
activeTab | Reading the conversation in the tab where you clicked Export. | Required |
scripting | Injecting the reader into that tab on demand. | Required |
| Chat site access | Persistent access to a specific AI site, used for batch export, live record and the floating button. | Optional, per site |
| Recorder file | Write access to the one file you choose for append or insert; granted by the browser picker, not a manifest permission. | Optional, per file |
offscreen | Creating a local blob URL so large files can be downloaded. | Required |
clipboardWrite | Copying Markdown when you ask for it. | Required |
contextMenus | The right-click export menu. | Required |
notifications | A short confirmation after an export. | Required |
The extension does not declare <all_urls> or “read and change all your data on all websites”. Site access is a separate, optional grant and is listed per provider in the manifest.
5. Retention and deletion
Settings and library data stay in your browser profile until you delete them. Settings → Your data → Delete all saved conversations clears the library; Reset all settings restores defaults. Removing the extension removes its storage and IndexedDB data according to the browser’s normal uninstall behaviour. Files already saved to your Downloads folder are yours and are not touched.
You can export the whole library as JSON at any time, and import it on another machine. That file is under your control.
6. Third parties
We do not sell, share or transfer personal data because we do not receive it. The AI providers whose pages you export (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and others) operate under their own privacy policies. Cloudflare hosts this website; its processing is described in Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
7. Cookies and analytics
The extension sets no cookies. This website stores a single language preference in localStorage if you use the language toggle. There is no analytics, no heatmap, no session recording and no advertising identifier.
8. Children
Threadmark is a general-purpose productivity tool, not directed at children under 13. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
9. Changes
If a future version adds a network feature — for example an optional sync or share service — this policy will be updated before that feature ships, and the extension will ask for consent rather than enabling it silently.
10. Contact
This beta is distributed directly. Use the delivery channel you received the build through, or the feedback instructions on the install page. The extension collects no contact details, so there is no privacy inbox that holds your data.
